NMIT offers a free English course for public housing tenants.
English for Bilingual Community Work is an accredited intermediate to high level English language course that will help you develop your language skills, while gaining skills and knowledge relevant to working in the community sector.
The aim of this specialised course is to improve students reading, writing, listening and speaking skills, as well as workplace competencies, to assist them in finding employment in the community using their bilingual and bicultural skills, and/or to undertake further study.
Bilingual workers may find employment at community health centres, neighbourhood houses, libraries, schools, local councils, welfare organisations, Migrant Resource Centres, hospitals, or housing organisations, in roles such as customer service, community worker or multicultural aide.
Course content
English language study at intermediate to high level
introduction to the community sector
workplace skills relevant to the community sector
exploring employment and further study options leading to work in the community
How you will learn
individual and group tasks
computer training, including Internet
visits to community organisations
guest speakers from community and government agencies
research and presentation projects
work placement and workplace mentoring (subject to successful completion of prerequisites)

20 hours a week x 18 weeks 6 months
