QUESTIONS FOR POLICE.

1.    How do I make sure that the Police do not approach my door if I call to report a matter?

For police attendance call 000.  When you speak to the operator tell them that you do not wish to speak or see police.   The radio operator will inform the police attending.

2.    Which number- 000 or Fitzroy Police- should I use?

000 is the number to call for police attendance.

3.    Why does it appear to take so long to generate Police responses to an issue?

Fitzroy generally has only one patrol unit operating, they frequently have more than one task to attend to they attend to these in the order of importance.   If a call is of an urgent nature it will be given higher priority and the radio dispatcher will try to get police from another suburb to attend if the Fitzroy Police are busy elsewhere.  This is a fairly frequent occurrence.

4.    Will Police report back to me if I report an issue?

This will depend on the nature of the issue, if police are called and there is a request for police not to speak to the reporting person.   My advice is that if a response is desired, the person reporting should ask for police to get back to them.

5.    What should I do if I can’t speak English and I need to contact Police?

Non English speaking people who need police attendance urgently should take the following action

Ø     Ring 000, Person will need to say be able to say ”Police”

Ø     000 operator will ask which town,  Response is Melbourne

Ø     000 operator will then connect to police communications centre

Ø     Caller will then be speaking to the police communications centre (but not a police person).   They will need to be able to say in English, which language they speak.

Ø     Once the call taker can identify what language is being spoken they can arrange a conference call with an interpreter.

3.     What are the roles and responsibilities of security guards on the estate? What powers do security guards have? ie What can and can't they do? To be translated into Vietnamese and Chinese.

Answers to above.-

  1. Yes, security can contact the Police on behalf of the tenants.  An assessment would be made by the Officer as to the nature of the issue and if Security can assist they will or if necessary they will contact the Police.  Obviously if it is a serious issue warranting Police attendance, security will assist.

  1. If possible contact security and supply building and unit number.  Depending on the language spoken, we may have an officer on duty who speaks the same language as the tenant,  If not, contact another tenant who speaks the same language as the tenant involved as well as English to contact security.

  1. To patrol the Estate and have a visible presence, to observe and report any illegal activity, to assist tenants, refuse access to unauthorised visitors, to remove or escort such persons from the Estate, to attend incidents, to look for possible breaches of security - ie theft, drug activity, violent incidents, to be aware and alert in regards to hazardous items and or maintenance issues.

CHUBB Security and the Police have a strong commitment to co-operate and assist one another in the prevention of crime. Security Officers will support the Police when assistance is required, and in all emergency situations contact the Police. The powers of arrest are in accordance with the relevant State legislation and are covered in the accredited Security training course.  A Security Officer has the same powers of arrest as any ordinary member of the public where an offence punishable by law has been committed.
